Reintroducing What the Water Keeps
A new title. A haunting new cover. A story that was never about a curse.
I'm excited to announce the upcoming rerelease of What the Water Keeps, formerly titled The Cajun Curse, a Southern Gothic novel set deep in the Louisiana bayou.
At its heart is Pearlette Theriot, a woman trapped in a marriage defined by violence, isolation, and control. But the bayou remembers what the world would rather forget. Beneath its dark waters are the voices of women who came before her, women whose stories were silenced, whose suffering went unanswered, and whose debts have yet to be settled.
This rerelease is more than a new title and cover. I've been revisiting the manuscript, strengthening its characters, refining its timeline, and deepening the connections between Pearlette, her grand-mère Mae Belle, and the mysterious women of the water.
Why the change? Because the original title no longer captured what this story is truly about. Pearlette isn't cursed. The violence inflicted upon her is the result of human choices, not supernatural fate. And the power waiting in the bayou isn't simply something to fear. It's something that remembers.
What the Water Keeps is a story of survival, generational trauma, the strength of women, and the reckoning that comes when silence finally breaks.
I'm proud to give this story the title, presentation, and attention it deserves.
Some debts don't get forgiven. And some stories refuse to stay buried.
Coming soon from J.T. Thompson.
